What's New?
Message from Chapter Co-Chairs, Enny & Wally

Greetings to all, and especially to our new and reinstated members. Enny and I are grateful for all of the help and support we've received from our fellow officers, board members, and volunteer trip leaders. The Mohawk-Hudson Chapter is alive and well! Five leaders are now sporting their new L.L. Bean green fleece "hike leader"jackets. They are: Gerry Weber, Sharon Bonk, Kevin Cox, Wally Herrod, and Enny Dufur. A number of others are on their way to earning their jackets as well.
Our mid-week hike leaders have been getting strong turn-outs over the past several months. However, these hikes tend to be somewhat more strenuous because of terrain or distance. In response, Dee and Frank Wind have begun an off-shoot of the mid-week hiking program, called AARP (At A Relaxed Pace), AARP hikes are usually shorter and less rugged, and they are scheduled on a separate weekday from the mid-week hikes, so it is possible for us to go on either or both! During the hotter months ahead, these shorter hikes may be especially appealing, and may allow parents to be home when school dismisses for the day.
We hope many will come out and enjoy our summer social on Thursday, August 21. This is our first try for such a gathering, which shortens the time we can all be together from the previous break between the June Picnic and the November Annual Meeting. We also hope many will be thinking about attending our Chapter's weekend at the AMC's new Highland Center in the White Mountains (October 3-5). Find details of both of these events in the Summer 2008 Issue of On The Western Slope .
As always, Enny and I welcome your expertise in helping the Chapter, and your suggestions and comments.

--- Enny and Wally

Chapter Meetings
Spring Chapter Meeting:
Mohawk-Hudson Chapter Spring Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2008. This meeting will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 1500 Western Ave., Albany, NY. Potluck supper @ 6:00 PM, meeting and speaker will follow.

Annual Chapter Picnic:
This year's annual picnic and business meeting will again be held in the pavilion just inside Peebles Is. State Park, in Waterford. We will be setting up around 5 PM, but come early and hike the trails, if you like. The fare will be warm and cold dishes, hot dogs, hamburgers, desserts and drinks. There is no cost for parking or for the picnic. Please bring a dish to share. Drinks, and the meat, buns and fixin's will be provided. Dress for the weather. If it is chilly, you might like to put something in a thermos. After a social period and supper, we will have an open meeting with an agenda to bring folks up-to-date on chapter activities, obtain ideas and do planning for the upcoming months. Last year's picnic was well attended, and we met some new members who had new ideas on chapter activities and membership retention.
Some people like to bring their own folding chairs, and to use the fishing dock or horseshoe pits. Bring your favorite photos to share.
Directions: Heading north on I-787 (that's the one that parallels the Hudson River) at mile post 9, you pass Hoosick Street exit 9. Continue on 787, 2.5 miles to Ontario Street at mile post 11.4. Turn right (east) onto Ontario St. and go 0.8 miles, where you will see signs for the park, and turn left onto Delaware Ave. Go .6 miles to the park entrance. Parking is on the left.
Please register with Art Crotty or Pat Palmateer (518-237-6459, or crottyfox@verizon.net), so we can plan for how many will be attending. Also, what food dish you are bringing to share.

Prospective Members Welcome:
As always, members and prospective members are welcome to attend all chapter activities and meetings. If you have any questions about our club, need directions to the meeting, and/or would like to obtain a copy of our quarterly newsletter, feel free to contact either of our Chapter's Co-Chairs, Evelyn Dufur 477-7132 <edufur@aol.com> or Wally Herrod 758-9463 <bwherrod@berk.com>.

Volunteer Opportunities

Follow the link below to view the committees we have set up to service the Mohawk Hudson Chapter. Members, and prospective new members, should contact the committee chairman directly to volunteer to be part of a committee. See the club officer and committee list for addresses and telephone numbers. There are tasks from short well defined ones to long term research projects. There are armchair tasks and outdoor tasks. Everyone interested can contribute and be a valued member of the committee and the chapter. It really can provide a great deal of fun and self satisfaction. Click here to go to our Volunteer Page.

Mohawk Hudson Chapter

The AMC Mission

Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club, a nonprofit organization with more than 80,000 members, promotes the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and trails of the Northeast. We believe that the mountains and rivers have an intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunity, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. We encourage people to enjoy and appreciate the natural world because we believe that successful conservation depends on this experience.
