Design and Optimize Magnets Quickly and Easily on Your PC

Imbedded Sky/Mesh2 fully automatic finite element mesh generator.

Fast and memory-efficient finite element solver; handles permanent magnets, conducting sources, nonlinear materials, and "infinity" boundary condition.

Optimization process adjusts user-specified design parameters to achieve desired magnetic field harmonics, field values at points, minimum stray field, and/or minimum material volume.

We constructed the simple model on the left to demonstrate magnet optimization. It is an axisymmetric model of one half of a magnet system consisting of two superconducting coils and two iron pole pieces.

The plot on the right shows the magnetic field in Tesla versus angle on the surface of a 20-cm radius sphere for the initial design. The uniform target field is 0.3T.

The screen on the right shows the model after the automatic optimization process. Note that some of the changes in the geometric dimensions are very small in order to achieve field homogeneity on the order of a few parts per million.

The plot on the left shows a nearly uniform magnetic field of 0.3T.
